BLOG: A Week at MAPUK
A working week in the eyes of a Year 10 student.
Hello there, my name is Daniel and I am a Year 10 student participating in work experience at MAPUK. Initially, I didn’t know much about MAPUK until the many different parts of the business were explained to me, especially the bespoke design process and technical side of the company.
I chose MAPUK for my work experience as I have always been interested in design and how a business operates day to day. My aim is to learn a few key aspects about how a company works, these include communication inside the business, what a typical day for an employee looks like, and how a company fits clients’ needs.
A week of learning and discovery
Each day brought a new learning curve. On the first day, I was shown around and introduced to most of the products and their uses, and I also received a tour of the office.
On the second day, I was shown how to use a design software called AutoCAD, which the company uses to design their various bespoke grilles. By Wednesday, I had completed my own design on CAD and was properly taught how the downstairs warehouse operates. Today, I am learning more about how the business grows, its connections and how the PR side is run.
One of the most interesting tasks I completed during the week was learning the basics of a software package called SOLIDWORKS. This is a professional tool used around the world to design everything from everyday items to complex engineering solutions. I used it to create a design for a thin beam that could be used in construction.
New skills and insights
So far, I have learned a lot about logistics, how a company communicates both internally and externally, and how they design solutions tailored to each client. I’ve also gained valuable hands-on experience with two specialised design systems: AutoCAD and SOLIDWORKS.
The people behind the process
Before my first day, I expected everyone to be very formal with one another. However, that wasn’t the case. Instead of just being polite, the team at MAPUK have been genuinely kind and patient, especially when I or others had a problem to work through.
Looking ahead
Thanks to this work experience, I’ve developed a few ideas of potential career pathways, civil engineering and interior design being two strong possibilities. MAPUK has helped me understand more about where my interests lie and what skills I currently have.

A huge thank you to the team at MAPUK for accommodating me this past week. They’ve been nothing but kind and patient, especially during tasks where I wasn’t the fastest or most proficient. I would highly recommend this experience to any other student, it’s a truly refreshing insight into what working life is really like compared to how it might appear.
